Tor Publisher Gillian Green has signed a new romantasy trilogy from previously indie published author Juliette Cross. The deal, for UK and British Commonwealth rights ex Canada, was struck with Chris Scheina, director for subsidiary rights at Macmillan USA.
The first in the The Fire That Binds trilogy will be Firebird, described as a sexy, romantasy House of the Dragon set in Ancient Rome. It will be published in April 2025 in hardback, trade paperback, eBook and audio, with books two and three to follow in 2026 and 2027.
The series is an enemies-to lovers-romantasy in which dragons rule Ancient Rome – with their supreme legionnaires and flying deathriders, they conquer and pillage and burn. Malina is taken captive into this world by Roman general and shapeshifter Julianus Dakkia and they find themselves fighting their forbidden attraction.
Gillian Green, Tor Publisher, says: ‘Obviously dragons remain hugely popular in romantic fantasy, and Juliette has bought such a fun and fresh approach to this established subgenre with her stunning re-imagining of an Ancient Rome where Emperors may govern but dragons rule . . . This is simply glorious – a wonderfully spicy and original historical fantasy with an utterly addictive enemies-to-lovers romance at its heart.’
Juliette Cross says: ‘Recreating Rome where the nobility reign supreme as shape-shifting dragons and the gods play favourites, giving mortal women their mystical powers, has been an idea I've been wanting to bring to life for many years. I'm absolutely thrilled to finally write this world for Tor UK and Bramble and share with readers.’
