Picador have acquired the next two novels by Jessie Burton, the million-copy bestselling author of The Miniaturist and The Muse. Publishing Director Francesca Main acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Juliet Mushens at Caskie Mushens.

The first of the two as yet untitled novels tells the story of three women – Elise Morceau, Rebecca Holden and Laura Simmons – and the complex connections they have shared across decades and continents. This is a novel about love, sex, work, motherhood, how we construct our pasts and dream our futures, and the wildly divergent paths our lives can take.

Jessie Burton said: ‘I am so happy to be writing again. To have the support of such a wonderful editor in Francesca Main, and the most fantastic, hard-working publishing team, makes me a very lucky writer indeed. To write novels people want to read seems like such a simple desire – and it still is for me – but it’s a fairly wandering path. Home lies at the end of it, and the sign says Picador.’

Francesca Main said: ‘It’s been an incredible thrill and honour to work with Jessie and I’m overjoyed to be joining her and Juliet on the next step of the journey. All of us at Picador are enormously proud of Jessie’s astonishing achievements and can’t wait to see her go from strength to strength.’

Juliet Mushens said: ‘Working with Jessie is a complete delight – and seeing her go from debut to million-copy-bestseller, sold in 38 countries around the world, has been a dream. With Francesca Main at the helm of her publishing, I know this is just the beginning of her career, and cannot wait for even more readers to fall in love with her words.’

The Miniaturist was an instant bestseller on publication in July 2014 and has since sold over a million copies. It has been made into a major new BBC TV adaptation, which is due to air this winter. The Muse, like The Miniaturist, was a number one bestseller in hardback and paperback. It is currently the second bestselling paperback by value across the TCM and Pan Macmillan’s biggest-selling fiction paperback in two years.

Jessie Burton was born in 1982 and lives in London. She studied at Oxford University and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and worked for nine years as an actress and a PA before becoming a writer. She is the author of two critically acclaimed and internationally bestselling novels, The Miniaturist and The Muse.
