We're delighted to announce that Rasputin by Douglas Smith has been shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prizes for best biography.
Founded in 1919 by Janet Coats, the widow of publisher James Tait Black to commemorate her husband’s love of good books, The James Tait Black Awards (one for the best work of fiction and the other for the best biography) are awarded annually by the University of Edinburgh’s School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures – the oldest centre for the study of English Literature in the world, established in 1762.
More than 400 books were read by Edinburgh academics and postgraduate students, who nominated books for the shortlist.
The shortlisted biographies are:
- The Vanishing Man: In Pursuit of Velazquez by Laura Cumming (Chatto and Windus)
- A Life Discarded: 148 Diaries Found in a Skip by Alexander Masters (Fourth Estate)
- A Stain in the Blood: The Remarkable Voyage of Sir Kenelm Digby by Joe Moshenska (William Heinemann)
- Rasputin by Douglas Smith (Pan Macmillan)
The winner will be announced on Monday 14 August 2017 at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
