Winner of Imprint of the Year at the 2019 British Book Awards

Picador is the literary imprint at Pan Macmillan and what defines a Picador book is the author’s voice: we believe the way a story is told is just as important as the story itself. We publish writers from all over the world, bringing international authors to an English-language readership and providing a platform for voices that are often not heard. The Picador list includes literary fiction; new, relevant and challenging fiction; narrative non-fiction; authoritative, cultural non-fiction; and the best contemporary poetry, as well as a number of uncategorizable books that will, we hope, surprise you.

We are lucky to be home to prize-winning, internationally renowned writers and we are the proud publisher of many bestselling titles.

We also aim to make beautiful books, with the highest production and design values, from exciting and original first publications to clean, elegantly commercial paperbacks, alongside digital and audio editions.

  • Paul Baggaley

I am responsible for many of Picador’s established giants, including novelists Cormac McCarthy, Don DeLillo, Alan Hollinghurst, Emma Donoghue and Alice Sebold, non-fiction writers Jon Ronson and Clive James and poets Carol Ann Duffy and John Cooper Clarke. I have commissioned new writers such including Richard House, Hannah Kent, Olivia Laing and Sinéad Gleeson. I’d like to develop Picador’s regional writing from all parts of the UK and also and especially from Ireland. I am keen to find prose that is original, inventive, possibly experimental, as well as unusual, innovative and ambitious projects.

  • Sophie Jonathan

    Senior Commissioning Editor

I publish literary fiction and voice-driven non-fiction. I love fiction that combines a perfectly handled plot, vivid characters and beautiful – even lyrical – writing. I am particularly fond of books that write a place beautifully and in non-fiction I am always looking to find unique personal narratives. At Picador the authors I work with include Elizabeth Macneal, Hannah Kent, Helen Oyeyemi, Tim Winton, Jim Crace, Emily St. John Mandel, and Megan Hunter.

  • Ansa Khan Khattak

I joined Picador in 2014. I love and am keen to find new fiction which is bold and remarkable, novel either in the way that it’s written, or what it has to say about the world that we live in. I would like to find non-fiction that has a strong narrative voice and manages to convey something meaningful, important – or simply extremely entertaining – to the reader. I would love to bring more voices in translation to Picador – introducing fresh voices or perspectives to an audience who might otherwise miss out on them is something about which I feel passionately. My authors include Lucia Berlin, Manohla Dargis, Wendy Erskine, Genki Kawamura and Éric Vuillard.

  • Kishani Widyaratna

I am privileged to publish literary fiction, poetry and all stripes of quality non-fiction. I’m passionate about nurturing radical new talent and am a longstanding Contributing Editor for The White Review. I am keen to champion underrepresented voices and expand our publishing of distinctive international writing from beyond Europe. In non-fiction, I’m particularly interested in writers that challenge the status quo and critique our culture, society and politics. In fiction I am drawn to writers who push boundaries thematically or formally, stories that engage with the world, and writing that cuts through everything. Some writers I publish at Picador include Jamie Quatro, Julia Armfield, Olivia Laing, Denise Riley, Andrea Lawlor, Jericho Brown, Sinéad Gleeson, Mieko Kawakami and Carol Ann Duffy.
